Chapter 3: “The things I can do for her”

A couple of days had passed since I made the contract with the former stray god Athena.

And I was currently somewhat famous at the school.

“Hey hey, was he the one who made a contract with a stray god?”

“What an idiot… he’s gonna regret that.”

If I had to respond to that last statement: I didn’t regret it at all.

On the contrary, I was really happy to have made a contract with such a wonderful god as her.

“I-I’m sorry… T-this is because of me…”

There was one reason for that: she was super cute.

I had thought that she had had an un-human-like beauty the first time I saw her, but I had still not gotten used to it. Her previously damaged hair had turned all glossy silver-white after our contract, and all the gazes of the boys we passed in the corridors of the school became nailed to her.

Moreover, her reactions to things were also cute. Like right now; she was misunderstanding the gazes of curiosity directed at me because of her and slightly panicking, her face flushed red.

Well, that might have been part of it, but if I had to say, the fact that I had been suspended since the very first day of school for violent actions was the larger reason people were staring in my direction.

My suspension had been lifted the day before, so I was making my way to school for only the second time.

“Uwaa, is that him? The one who beat the crap out of the second son of a count on the very first day?”

“Even if status has no meaning here, is that normal? Beating someone half to death?”

Look, I didn’t beat him up, okay?

They were all groundless accusations.

It was an OHKO, okay?

“Alright then, Kami-sama, I’m going to go to class now.”

“Okay! I’ll wait in the corridor!”

“…Nonono, it’ll take quite a while, so go do something el–”

“I’ll wait!”

O-okay then.

Shaking off the prickly stares aimed at my back, I opened the door to the classroom and stepped inside.

“………”

All conversations inside stopped.

I gave a bitter smile at the different reaction to my entrance than the one I got on my first day and sat down in my seat.

“Morning, Alice.”

“Right. Morning, Yuno.”

And with that, we both set about getting ready for class.

I hadn’t seen her in a while, but she didn’t seem angry. Which was a relief.

Due to my having been suspended, this was going to be my first class.

We’d be learning the basics of magic before noon, and we were going to go to the school’s training grounds to have mock fights in the afternoon.

I was already thinking about the afternoon’s mock fights.

I was going to show them spearmanship good enough to get them to stop calling me incompetent.

Until now, I had hidden my strength, scared of it going out of control, but I now had a reason to actually try to do my best. Right, motivation, that’s what it was called.

I glanced over towards the corridor. A pair of brilliantly shining red eyes were staring at me through the slightly open doorway.

Our eyes met. Instantly, the pair of red eyes became slightly watery.

It still must not have felt real for her. That the person she had made a contract with was, indeed, there.

“…Fufu.”

I couldn’t help but grin as I thought how happy she must have felt.

“You’re making a weird face. It looks stupid.”

It seemed like Alice had noticed.

Slightly embarrassed, I returned to thinking about the mock fights in the afternoon.

I had received one skill when I made the contract with Athena.

‘Spear Arts’

As the name suggested, it allowed you to be good at using a spear.

Most of my practice before had been with the sword, so I had been slightly worried, but that worry had been taken care of during a rehearsal for the upcoming fight I had done the day before. I was able to use a spear just as well as a sword.

I only had one goal. That was to show everyone that Athena wasn’t useless or incompetent.

Apparently, gods could freely change what they looked like.

However, she couldn’t. It seemed like too few people knew the god named Athena.

So basically, the more famous the god called Athena became, the stronger her powers would be, and she wouldn’t have to peek through a gap in the doorway at me… and stand out while doing so. She could turn into a small monster, or look inside the classroom with clairvoyance, or even make herself invisible.

I had been honestly impressed when I heard that.

Why famous gods were really powerful could also be explained by that.

People who made a contract with a famous god received strong skills, and became famous themselves. And so, the god with whom they had made a contract also became more famous.

Wait, now even I’m getting confused by what I’m saying.

Anyway, while at first glance gods seem to have nothing to gain from them, contracts allow for finely balanced win-win scenarios.

And if so, there was just one thing I had to do today.

And that was to win the mock fight in the afternoon using the Spear Arts I had received from Kami-sama. But I couldn’t simply win. I wanted to give her an overwhelming, one-sided beat-down as a present.

Then she’d probably think something like: ‘Yuno’s flying… using the skill I gave him!’

And that’s not all. Someone like me, who had been called incompetent his whole life, would have achieved a complete victory. A fact like that would highlight her competence even more.

The fact that I won a mock fight would lead to others thinking Athena was amazing, which would lead to them wanting to make contracts with her too.

Well, that’s how I wanted it to go, at least.

I was thinking about which moves looked the coolest and what finish looked the most spectacular.

Even moves that were impossible for a normal person to execute were possible for me, after all.

While I didn’t know how back when I was little, I could now handle Zeus’ power to some extent.

Making full use of the morning class, I went through the mock fight in my mind over and over again.

A result of which, it goes without saying, was the teacher calling me over once class was finished.

And then, the afternoon arrived, and the mock fights – began.
