Chapter 7: The Girls’ School (Half Nr. 2)

Shit! I didn’t think I’d be disliked that much!

I ran up a flight of stairs, checked to see if no one was around, and leaned against the wall.

“Haaa… damn it.”

And while I was muttering to myself, something unusual happened.

“You! Say that again! You might be the daughter of a duke, but that was still rude!”

It was the voice of an angry girl. The sound had seemingly leaked out from a room at the far end of the corridor.

Curious, I went down the corridor not making a noise, and peeked through the gap in the slightly open door.

There were a couple of students inside.

One girl was facing the three others, an unpleasant atmosphere filling the room.

“Oh my, are you perhaps deaf, if you didn’t hear it? Then, I shall say it again. Disappear from in front of me right this instant. You’re an eyesore,” said the girl on her own, flashing an elegant smile.

As she did so, the face of the blonde, twin-tailed girl opposite her, between the two others, turned red as she angrily said “Not just once, but twice now…! You’ll regret this!”

“Then try making me. You won’t get anywhere with that little pack of yours though. Group? Caste? What’re those? Are they edible?” the beautiful silver-haired girl said, provoking them even further.

I wondered why. Looking at their numbers, and their numbers only, the group of three was at an advantage. But I still felt like the girl on her own was overwhelmingly stronger.

But still… how scary. Way too scary. So this was what the world of young ladies was like. It was not something I should have seen.

“T-that’s… that’s right. It seems like you really want to get beaten up.”

Blonde twintails exchanged looks with a brown-haired girl next to her, and the brown-haired girl began drawing some kind of letters on the ground with surprising speed.

Is that… a magic circle? They give off the same feeling as the letters the old books in father’s room use.

“My, I wonder what you might be doing?” Silver-girl asked, her purple eyes laughing.

And that was when it happened.

“Gugigi!”

“Gugi, guguge!” (goblin sounds)

The magic circle began shining red, and two goblins appeared.

The two goblins looked at silver-girl with crude smirks on their faces.

“…Do you even know what you have done? I have to question your sanity, summoning such beasts to this sacred academy.”

“It seems even you didn’t expect that! But don’t you think it’ll be a good lesson to you, miss-always-arrogant? You’ll have time enough to regret having angered us while being attacked by these uncleanly beasts! A good day to you. Although I doubt we’ll ever meet again,” blonde twintails almost spat out the last couple of words, and, pulling the two petrified girls on either side of her along, she left the room.

As for me, I had stuck myself to the ceiling of the corridor to let them pass.

…I’d be in more trouble than just goblins if I was found.

Then I began wondering what to do.

I peeked inside the room once again.

I had a reason for not going to rescue her immediately.

And that was because silver-girl was extremely calm.

“Gugigi!”

One of the goblins tried to approach her.

“Don’t come any closer than that. You’ll regret it,” she said in a strong voice, glaring at it.

“Gugi!?”

The goblin must have felt something too. Stopping dead in its tracks, it observed silver-girl closely.

A stalemate… the first one to move was the girl.

“Move. You’ll be a nuisance if you keep standing there forever.”

The goblin didn’t move. Instead, it tried to hide a grin as it turned towards the other goblin.

That’s where I began rethinking whether just watching was all right.

“Gugigi!”

The goblins began to move.

She had been driven into a corner.

Still, the light in her eyes hadn’t died out.

Instead, with elegant steps exuding nobility and confidence, she began walking towards the goblins herself.

“Fine then. Do what you want. But, while you may do what you want to my body, you won’t take my dignity and heart.”

Having seemingly said what she wanted, the girl took out a dagger from her pocket, and pointing it at her neck–

“Stooooooooooop!”

I burst into the room, taking the dagger from her.

“Hey you, what are–”

I stabbed the dagger into the chest of one of the goblins, and used that forward momentum to charge at the other one.

“Gege!”

I easily stabbed through goblin number two as well.

The two goblins had died, and now the unpleasant smell of blood was starting to fill the room.

I wiped the blood off my hand and turned towards the girl.

“How do you do. I just happened to be passing by, so please don’t mind me.”

I would probably have been able to gain a bit of favourability had I named myself, but I didn’t.

My sixth sense was telling me it would be better if I didn’t get involved with her.

While both her appearance and personality were different, she still somehow resembled my sister.

Not good. I have to escape.

“Right. I guess I should thank you,” silver-girl said, observing me.

“Okay, I’ll be going now.”

I turned my back to her.

“Hee? You won’t even give me your name? You’re a first-year from the Magic Knight Academy, aren’t you? Isn’t this an opportunity to get me on your good side?”

“Haha, I’m not worthy of giving you my name.”

““……””

Silence reigned.

Perhaps having grown tired of it, the girl said “Luna.” in a slightly irritated voice.

“Hm?”

“Luna Flame. It’s my name.”

“Ah, I see…”

“…You’re not surprised. You’re interesting,” the girl who had called herself Luna said with a cruel smile.

Eek. A nasty chill went down my spine.

Not good, I’ve gotta run, and fast.

“Then, see y–”

“So then, what’s your name?”

Luna’s purple eyes glinted in suspicion, not letting me get away.

…Honestly. It seems like I really am bad at dealing with strong-willed girls.

While she had the same silver-white hair, she really was different from Athena.

“Ara? What might be troubling you? Don’t tell me you’re not going to tell me your name even after I gave you mine?”

I guess I have no choice.

If it let me escape, I guess I had to do it.

“I’m the second son of count Burn. Maro Burn. Pleased to make your acquaintance,” I said, grinning.

And that was how I met Luna.
