Chapter 9: The Solitary Moon

…The what now? Solitary moon?

Just as I thought that, a girl with a fearsome air about her appeared between the now wide open double doors.

And the moment I saw her, I gulped.

It was such a shock I felt as if time itself had stopped.

Her footsteps reverberated throughout the dead-silent hall.

She walked to the very centre of the hall, elegant, noble, and beautiful.

Our eyes were all stolen by the beautiful silver.

That’s… Luna… right?

It was unmistakably her. Silver hair and deep purple eyes. And that feeling she gave off that took control of the whole venue.

However, while I knew all that, there was still one thing I didn’t understand.

She was beautiful enough to make anyone who saw her gasp in awe. But would that be enough to garner this much attention?

“Ein, who is she?” I asked her, and Ein’s eyes widened as if she was surprised.

“You don’t know Luna-sama?”

“Well, I’ve heard her name before, but I was wondering why she’s getting so much attention.”

“…Her name is Luna Flame. She’s the daughter of Duke Flame, and her family is one of the Four Great Noble Families.”

I see. The Flame family. I had thought the name sounded familiar when I had first heard it.

“But even then, isn’t this situation too strange?”

“Not at all. She’s here. That in itself already makes this unusual.”

…I don’t get it.

She might have been the young miss of a prestigious family, but she was still a student at St. Ferris’ Girls’ Academy. It shouldn’t have been strange for her to turn up.

“You might not know this, but she’s rather famous for her dislike of people. Ever since the first day of school, she’s been saying that she won’t attend this event.”

“…So basically, she didn’t want a knight?”

“Yes, that is right. And yet–”

Ein stopped mid sentence, looking in Luna’s direction.

Luna stopped in the very centre of the hall, seemingly impervious to the stares of everyone around her, and elegantly surveyed the whole hall.

…I couldn’t move.

While I could still talk, her overwhelming presence had created an atmosphere where moving was not allowed.

And still, there was someone who almost ran up to her.

Her golden ponytail swinging back and forth, she curtseyed with perfect posture.

“It has been a while, Luna-sama.”

…It was Alice.

That surprised even me. Actually no, Alice’s family, the Rose family was also one of the Four Great Noble Families, and that’s probably also how the two knew each other.

“Hello Alice, it has indeed been a while.”

Luna answered, and a ripple of agitation ran through the students from Ferris Girls’.

“The Solitary Moon… talked to her in such a casual manner… as expected of Alice-sama.”

Ein reacted the same. She watched Luna and Alice’s exchange of words with eyes full of disbelief.

Still, ‘the Solitary Moon’, huh? It was a pretty cool nickname, but it basically meant lonely Luna, didn’t it…

Meanwhile, another person had walked over to the two of them.

“I do believe it is our first time meeting. I am the heir of the Elrode County, Kraim Elrode.”

It was the handsome blond guy from earlier, Kraim. He had a lot of guts. Although, having heard his family name, that made sense.

Their family boasted strength not very inferior to my own.

“Luna-sama… did you come here… because you had a change of mind?” Alice asked Luna meekly, completely ignoring Kraim.

“No. I do still like being alone, you know? But it seems like I’ll be assigned a knight no matter what happens here. So, I came to the conclusion that it would make more sense for me to choose rather than having some nobody assigned to me.”

“…Then please, allow me. I’ve been praying for this day to come. I can promise that I am stronger than anyone else present here.”

“Alice-san, I simply cannot let that statement go. I, Kraim Elr–”

“Right you are. I have heard the rumours. You’re the top student of the year, no? No surprises there, really. You would certainly not disappoint me.”

Let Kraim speak, for heaven’s sake!

“Then…!”

“However, you said you were the strongest person here, but is that really true?”

“…What do you mean?”

An uneasy atmosphere spread throughout the hall.

I gulped, checking which direction the doors were in, just in case.

“Alice, you are most certainly excellent. But you are still immature. A truly strong person does not boast their strength.”

“…! Then who here is that truly strong person?”

“I, Kraim–”

“– Maro Burn. He’s in your class, if I remember correctly.”

Alice was speechless. So was I.

And as for the person in question…

“…Eh? Me?” he asked, pointing at himself, looking at the people around him for confirmation.

He really must not have expected his own name to be spoken by Luna.

This was a tricky situation. I slowly backed away, as quietly as I could.

“Maro Burn. I allow you to come over here. You are present, no?”

Maro jumped in shock, then looked over at me.

– ‘See? I told you?’ was what his gaze seemed to be saying.

I grinned.

– ‘Go on then.’

Maro began walking towards Luna triumphantly, a proud look on his face.

He then went down on one knee, and greeted Luna.

His wastefully sophisticated movements were most certainly those of the second son of a count.

“I am here, as asked for. I am none other than Maro Burn, the second son of count Burn,” Maro said dramatically, looking up at Luna with an attempt at a stern expression.

Luna looked down at him with a bored-looking expression, her purple eyes narrowing.

I saw Alice gulp.

Kraim was almost in tears. I rolled my eyes at the scene. Athena looked at me worriedly.

That moment of utter confusion from all parties continued for a while, everyone holding their breaths.

And then–

“…Who are you?” said Luna, and everyone gulped.
