In the joyous background music, the bright white light finally fades, and everyone finally sees the scene in front of them.

In the middle of the big white world, there is a small, circle-shaped stage. Around the stage is a ring of cheap rainbow LED lights. The two-meter-tall Mario stands upon this stage. The lights flash, and he confidently poses with his thumbs-up, looking absolutely ridiculous.

Above the stage, an LED sign hovers in the air, showing a red number: 6456.

With the stage as the center, the white light fades and the surroundings begin to appear.

Tang Mo’s gaze sharpens.

The entirety of this white world is a huge Monopoly map!

Mario’s stage is in the middle of the map, and 150 one-meter squares, lined up against each other, surround the stage. The squares make a long and thin rectangular path, twisting and turning, starting from below the eight players’ feet and continuing forward, curving nine times, before finally ending at Mario’s little stage.

Under Tang Mo’s feet is a bright red square. This square is different from the others.

The other squares’ edges shine with white light, but only the square underneath the eight people’s feet is filled with red light. Tang Mo has seen this color before, as red as blood, written in the middle of the square in English—

[START]

“Everybody, welcome to Mario’s Monopoly Game!”

The deep man’s voice scares everyone. When they raise their heads, Mario has already stopped posing. Instead, he stands in the middle of the little stage, hands on his hips. “My beloved children, welcome to Mario’s Monopoly Game! I am the best friend of your childhood, Mario!”

When he was young, Tang Mo often played Super Mario. The craze for this mushroom-loving plumber once swept across the entire world, setting unbelievable records for Nintendo. He is, in fact, very familiar with Mario, but no matter if it’s Tang Mo or the other seven people, none of them can relax in front of this giant Mario. Everyone instead watches him cautiously.

Mario doesn’t seem to have noticed. He says, touched, “Oh, look at your expressions. Do not cry, children, I am your most beloved Mr. Mario. This is such a moment worthy of celebration. Children’s appreciation makes Mr. Mario so touched that I wipe my tears every night in the sewers. You love Mario so much that I’ve decided to open this Monopoly game for you! My children, this game was made for every human who loves Mario!”

Tang Mo doesn’t really listen to this bullshit. He seems to be looking at Mario, but in reality, he’s observing the other seven people as well as the Monopoly board.

Since he’s already entered the game, he can’t change anything about the situation, so he won’t focus so much on getting revenge against those seven people who dragged him in. What he needs to focus on is how to clear the game.

Right now, what’s most dangerous is this weird game.

One of the young men steps out and says, trembling, “What… what is this game?”

“Good question, my adorable child.” Mario gives him a thumbs-up. “This is a rewarding game. Every good and obedient child can win rich prizes from Mr. Mario. My children, come and play now, come to Mr. Mario’s side. These prizes shall all be yours.”

Mario turns to the side. Suddenly, a gold mountain appears behind him. Countless gold, silver, and jewels appear on the stage, forming a small hill. When Mario moves back into position, these prizes all disappear.

“Fuck, that much gold?”

“And diamonds, so many diamonds!”

Mario smiles kindly. “Children, these are all yours.”

Tang Mo says coldly, “What are the rules of the game?”

“Do you see these squares? The adorable Mr. Mario wants to play Monopoly with you. Only the child who reaches the stage the quickest will be able to receive all of the rewards. Have you played Monopoly before, my children?”

A young woman hesitates, then steps out. “I have. There are many types of Monopoly, but they all use dice. You advance however many squares as the dice says. There might be rewards in the squares, or punishments, and you can also go backwards? It’s like that.”[1]

“Right, it’s like that, I’ve played too,” someone agrees.

Mario smiles. “My children are so intelligent!”

This time, the Black Tower creature is the familiar Mario, and he’s been communicating kindly with everyone for all this time, so everyone slowly begins to let down their guard and speak up.

Tang Mo still only looks at Mario without speaking.

“In Mario’s Monopoly Game, there is a magical die.” Mario reaches out his hands and claps. A giant die descends from the sky, landing in front of the players with a boom. “This die is called the Lucky Die. Every child throws it in order, and whatever number you throw, you will advance that many squares. Whoever reaches this stage first is the ultimate lucky child and can receive all of the rewards that Mr. Mario has prepared.”

It’s that simple?

Tang Mo furrows his eyebrows. He’s about to speak up when an old but clear voice says, “Are these squares dangerous?”

Tang Mo turns. It’s the old man who pretended to have twisted his ankle.

Mario says happily, “How can lucky children come into danger?”

Tang Mo says it in another way. “What’s in these squares?”

In a Monopoly game, every square that the player enters will be either a prize or a punishment. If this was a normal Monopoly game, the reward would probably be gold coins or advancing another few squares forward. The punishments would usually be losing gold coins or going back to the start and restarting.

Mario: “In these 150 squares, there are many little presents that Mr. Mario wants to give my children. Lucky children can get these presents. I call them reward squares. But if there are good children, there are bad children too, and sometimes children will do things that make Mr. Mario sad, so there are some squares that have punishments in them. These are punishment squares.”

At the mention of punishments, everyone’s hearts thump nervously.

This cute-looking but giant Mario looks at everyone with dark eyes, lips slowly curving up in an eerie smile. “As for even better, even more obedient children, Mr. Mario has prepared even better rewards. As long as you enter these squares, you can get unimaginable rewards, such as an ability, or a chance to save your game. These squares are called king squares.”

Tang Mo’s breathing stops.

Abilities? A save file?

In this Monopoly game, there are even such rewards to be obtained.

The other seven are also shocked. Their eyes light up passionately, able to control their blazing gazes.
Tang Mo immediately calms down. If there are rewards, there are punishments too. If there are such good rewards, then the corresponding punishments will be…

“And there are also some squares, Mr. Mario calls them criminal squares. Bad children who do bad things are unforgivable criminals. They no longer like Mario, they like those weird-looking Angry Birds, or those disappearing colorful candies!” Mario’s expression suddenly turns monstrous. He’s still smiling, but his gaze is filled with hatred. “Mr. Mario has been with you for so many years. What’s so good about those disgusting birds? Why have you fallen in love with them! Tell me!”

Boom!

Mario stomps his foot on the stage. With this stomp, the white world trembles violently as if there was an earthquake.

“Oh, my adorable children, where was I?” Mario’s expression changes in a split second. The aftershocks haven’t yet stopped, but he’s kind and patient again. “Mr. Mario knows that you’re all good children. Good children will not step on those terrible criminal squares. Only bad children will get those. And Mr. Mario has especially given fun-loving children some special squares, called free-jump squares.”

The earthquake gradually subsides, but Tang Mo’s expression doesn’t look very good.

This giant Mario is unbelievably strong. To be able to make this kind of chaos, he must be even stronger than the big mole.

Mario seems not to have felt everyone’s terrified and wary gazes. “When someone walks into a free-jump square, they can choose to jump to another square. There are two options. Number one, you may jump forward at most 30 squares. Number two, you may jump backwards and go to any square that you have not previously been in before. My children love the free-jump square the most. They’re such interesting squares, and I’m sure that you will all love it.

“And there is a last type of square. This is the biggest surprise that Mr. Mario has prepared. It’s called the level-clear square. Yes, you heard correctly. Whoever is lucky enough to step on this square can clear the level immediately!” Mario waves his hands excitedly.

After a moment, he lowers his head and looks down at the eight people. “Then, children, the game is about to begin. Are you all ready?”

“Ding dong! Massive multiplayer dungeon game ‘Mario’s Monopoly Game’ officially begins. Rules—”

“Number one, you may only advance or go back however many squares as on the die, or according to the free-jump square rules.”

“Number two, king squares make up 5% of total squares. The rewards are allowed by the Black Tower to be taken out of the game.”

“Number three, criminal squares make up 5% of total squares. These will be causality punishments resulting in certain death.”

“Number four, free-jump squares make up 20% of total squares.”

“Number five, reward squares and punishment squares each make up 20% of total squares.”

“Number six, the player who steps in the only level-clear square may directly clear the level.”

“Number six[2], all other squares are blank squares.”

“Number seven, dying within the game means dying outside the game.”

“The adorable plumber uncle loves good and obedient children, but as for bad children, he will not be soft-hearted.”

The clear childlike voice sounds beside everyone’s ear, and everyone’s expressions change.

Mario stands on the little stage, smiling at the eight humans.

Originally, the young woman was holding the giant die in her arms. When she hears Mario say that the game is beginning, she looks at the young man beside her in fear. “Lin… Lin Bangcheng, I don’t want to throw this die. You… you go first.”

“Why me?” The young man’s expression changes too. “Why did you take it in the first place?”

The young woman quickly puts the die on the ground.

A balding middle-aged man hesitates. “There has to be an order. How about this, since the game is eight people, let’s go in reverse order of activating the game. The last one to activate the game will be the first to throw. How about that?”

Everyone looks at Tang Mo. Only the old man seems to be angry.

Tang Mo looks at them coolly. “I’m fine with going first. You seem to not know each other, so right now, I’m a bit curious as to why you worked together to pull me into the game?”

After hearing that Tang Mo is willing to go first, everyone sighs in relief.

A beer-bellied middle-aged man says, “Little bro, we’re sorry about that. You don’t know how disgusting this game is. When we touched the parterre, we were notified by the Black Tower that we activated some multiplayer dungeon game. But this is an eight-person game, so we need eight people to start it. The Black Tower told us that if we can’t find enough people, we’d be stuck within ten meters of the parterre. We’d be there forever. And the players have to touch the parterre within game time, so it’d be 6am to 6pm. We waited an entire day to get eight people.”

Tang Mo nods thoughtfully. “So you were the seventh?” he asks the old man.

“I was tricked by these scammers!” the old man huffs. “Why should we go in reverse? It’s these people who tricked us, so the first person who activated the game should go first! She destroyed all of us and tricked us into playing this game!”

The middle-aged woman’s face pales. “I… I didn’t want to, I just wanted to rest a bit, I didn’t know it would be like this. I… I don’t want to go first, let’s do reverse!”

The seven people begin to argue.

“If you hadn’t activated the game, would we all be here? I think you should start.”

“It’s clearly because you’re fifth, so you don’t want to go in reverse. You were pretty eager to trick that old man and that young dude, so what are you bullshitting about now?!”

“You…!”

“No fighting!” Mario’s deep, loud voice says suddenly, covering everyone else’s voices. “Good children never fight. Are you all bad children, huh?!”

When they recall Mario’s stomp a few moments ago, everyone immediately shuts up.

At this time, the unassuming Tang Mo suddenly says loudly, “It’s time to start the game. Adorable Mr. Mario, we eight want to play the game, but there’s only one die, so we must have an order. When we entered the game just then, I heard the Black Tower call our names in order. How about we go in that order?”

Tang Mo reacted so quickly and said so much in such a short amount of time that the others haven’t even processed the information yet.

Ten seconds later, someone comes back to their senses and glares angrily at Tang Mo. “What the fuck do you mean…”

“Oh, my intelligent child, you have a point. It’s Mr. Mario’s fault for not being considerate enough. Then let’s start according to the names that the Black Tower called. Let me see… the first is Li Zhen? Li Zhen, child, where are you? Come quickly and throw the die!”

The middle-aged lady’s face is steel-green. Her shoulders tremble, and she doesn’t move from her spot.

Mario asks again. “Li Zhen, my child, where are you?”

Shaking, the middle-aged lady steps forward.

Suddenly, Mario’s voice becomes ice-cold. “My child, do you not want to play this interesting game?”

The temperature drops, and an intense chill seeps into their bones. The middle-aged lady is so scared that she nearly collapses. Quickly, she runs forward and picks up the die. “I’ll play, I’ll play! I’ll play right now!”

Mario’s gaze is like daggers. The woman doesn’t even think, unconsciously throwing the die. The moment the die leaves her hand, Mario seems to have remembered something he’d forgotten, but it seems like he did it on purpose[3]. He lets out a creepy laugh and says in a low voice, “Oh, my children, I forgot to tell you. The first-place child can receive the rewards that Mr. Mario gives you, but the last-place child is so bad at playing games, so Mr. Mario will keep him here and teach him how to properly play games.”

Tang Mo’s heart drops.

Mario has a dazzling smile on his face, but his black-hole eyes aren’t smiling at all.

Thunk!

“5… I’m 5!”

The woman shakily steps forward. As soon as she leaves the ‘start’ square, she runs like crazy as if there’s something chasing her and doesn’t stop until she reaches the fifth square.

She stands on the fifth square. The edges turn from white light to yellow. The woman waits in fear, but nothing happens.

Mario smiles. “This is a blank square. Congratulations, my adorable child.”

The woman collapses to the floor.

The second player is the balding man. His face is blank as he picks up the die, turning it to the ‘5’ side, muttering to himself, “5… 5… 5!”

The die lands on 6.

The balding man swallows, nervously walking to the sixth square. When he steps onto the square, the edges suddenly turn red. Tang Mo closely looks at the light at the edge, and at this moment, the familiar Super Mario music fills the air.

The balding man stumbles, almost stepping into the middle-aged woman’s fifth square.

“Ding dong! Reward square activated, received one Mario’s Magical Red Mushroom. Eating the Magical Red Mushroom will recover stamina. It is only activatable within this dungeon and cannot be taken out of the game.”

A large, round, and colorful mushroom appears in the air, landing in the balding man’s arms with a plop.

The man was trembling a few seconds ago, and now that he’s gotten a reward, he’s frozen in place. One minute later, he finally devours the big mushroom gleefully. Even though it’s a raw mushroom, a rich aroma wafts out when the man bites down. Many people unconsciously swallow, gazes locked on the man.

Ten minutes later, the seven people have all thrown the die.

The old man and young woman were also lucky and threw a 6. Like the balding man, they received a magical mushroom as well.

The beer-bellied man, like the first woman, steps into the fifth square.

The young man and the other middle-aged man who hasn’t spoken yet threw a 4. Nervously, they step into it, but lucky, the fourth square is blank like the fifth square, and they heave a sigh of relief.
Last is Tang Mo.

Tang Mo had always thought that his luck sucked. After the Earth went online, he participated in three games: helping Pixels find her book, the first floor of the tower-attack game, and Mario’s Monopoly Game. Each time, he was forcibly pulled into the game.

For most Chinese players, they have probably only been screwed over once, and that was by Fu Wenduo to attack the tower.

But for Tang Mo, his life… is full of tragedy. Three games, not a single one entered on his own initiative. Official players all have abilities, but other people can breathe fire and plant poisonous flowers, and he only got a book. And the book’s a bastard; if it doesn’t insult Tang Mo every day, it’ll feel uncomfortable all over.

In conclusion, Tang Mo’s luck really isn’t that great.

He looks conflictingly at the die in his hand and quickly throws it.

Thunk!

The die lands on ‘3’.

No one’s gone to that square yet. Everyone else looks curiously at him, and the players standing on the fourth square are delighted. Mario said that he’d keep the last-place player, so with Tang Mo here, at least they’re not last for now.

Time Mo expressionlessly walks over. When he stands on the square, the white light suddenly turns red. Game music begins to play, and Tang Mo furrows his eyebrows, subtly putting his right hand on the match tattoo on his left wrist, looking around warily.

“Ding dong! Level 1 punishment square activated. Punishment: Within three minutes, say one bad thing that you’ve done in your life.”

Tang Mo: “...”

He’s unlucky, but he can’t be this unlucky!

And what sort of punishment is this? Is it looking down on him?!

Though he’s really speechless, Tang Mo doesn’t react on the surface, brain quickly working.

Level 1 punishment square. Maybe there will be Level 2 or Level 3 later on. This punishment isn’t severe, but will the other punishments be as easy?

As he considers these things, Tang Mo opens his mouth, saying calmly, “In middle school, I put 502 glue[4] on the seat of the person who bullied a lot of people, including me. During class, he stood up to answer a question, but his pants were glued to the chair, so it tore and we could all see his underwear. The teacher still doesn’t know that I did it.” After a pause, Tang Mo expressionlessly looks at Mario in the center of the stage. “After all, I’m a good child.”

Mario says in agreement, “Yes, punishing the bad people, you are a good child!”

The other seven people: “...”

At the same time, outside a certain community in New Pudong District:

Two young men and a young woman walk into the community. Quickly, they find the six odd corpses in the middle of the garden. The young woman with a ponytail crouches down and examines everyone’s wounds. Lastly, she returns to the first corpse, takes off her glove, and puts her hand on the middle-aged man’s fatal chest wound.

When her hand presses down, a white light appears on her palm. She closes her eyes and furrows her eyebrows, as if feeling for something.

Three minutes later, she says, “He was killed by that person.” She points to a nearby corpse. Next, she goes to each of the other five bodies, pressing her hand on their wounds, concluding in the end, “These six people killed each other.”

The young man wearing a black down jacket furrows his brows. “Fits Dungeon 2’s characteristics. This is already the third corpse point around this area, so the entrance to the Dungeon 2 should be close by. It’s not game time right now, so it’s safe. We have to hurry and find all the possible entrance points. With this community as the center, the area within a 500-meter radius are all possible hidden points of the entrance. Split up, meet back here at 12.”

The three exchange a glance, nod, and split up.

On the other hand, in Mario’s Monopoly Game, after the first round of die-tossing, the eight people have tossed another three rounds.

After four rounds, everyone’s advanced about ten steps.

From the second round forward, Tang Mo’s luck seems to have changed for the better. He advances seventeen squares in a row and is now on the twentieth square. He stepped in one reward square and two blank squares and is now safely in second place.

In the reward square, he gets an “Invincible Police Flower.” Just like the power-ups in Super Mario, these power-ups are all weird flowers and mushrooms. After eating this flower, Tang Mo is invincible for five minutes. The only pity is that he has to eat it immediately and can’t take it with him to other squares.

After Tang Mo eats the flower, he glows faintly golden. From afar, he looks sort of like a Buddha statue.

Indeed, he doesn’t fit in with the others. He was the last to be tricked into the game, unlike the others who waited by the parterre for a couple of days. Even if they were strangers before, they’re somewhat familiar now. And before the game started, Tang Mo tricked them too, making it so that he was the last to throw the die.

The order of throwing dice seems unimportant because the result is random and doesn’t change with the order of throwing, but in the first round, the order is actually the most important.

Throwing dice doesn’t necessarily rely all on luck.

The angle and strength with which the die is thrown can greatly affect the end result. When playing aeroplane chess[5], some people can often roll a 6 and advance quickly. It may not necessarily be that they got lucky, but because they know the tricks to rolling dice.

Other than this, if the last die-thrower steps on a free-jump square, then with the previous players’ experience, they can wisely choose which square to jump to.

Tang Mo also had these thoughts, so he wanted to let the other seven explore the road first and throw the die last after he confirmed the contents of each square. Regretfully, after it was his turn, he found out that this die is weird. It’s big and heavy, and he couldn’t control his throw at all. After each player throws it, the die spins around on its own. Each round he throws, Tang Mo tries to throw a certain number but fails each time.

This should be the game suppressing the possibility of players controlling their own throws.

Right now, the first-place player is in the 22nd square, then Tang Mo in the 20th, and the last-place player is in the 14th square.

In four rounds, three players have stepped on free-jump squares. They were smart and did not blindly move forward. Instead, they jumped to reward squares or blank squares that other players have already stepped in, or they chose not to jump and stayed where they were.

After four rounds, the last person holding the die is Tang Mo.

The 20th square is a reward square. Tang Mo eats his flower, and next is the middle-aged lady.

The die flies into the air and lands in her hands.

After Tang Mo eats the Invincible Police Flower, he keeps his head down, looking at the leftover stem in his hand. The flower is already in his stomach, and all that’s left is this long, thin, green stem. This reward seems to be better than the magical mushroom (other players have gotten other mushrooms as rewards too; as of now, they know that red mushrooms can recover stamina, green mushrooms can increase strength for ten minutes, and purple mushrooms can give players a sharp weapon for ten minutes), but the Invincible Police Flower must be eaten immediately, and the effects last for five[6] minutes.

Having gotten to around square 20, the eight players have activated other punishment squares as well.

Two of them were just like the one Tang Mo went to, easy and not a big deal. But there was one punishment square that, when the young woman stepped inside, generated a giant black mushroom. The young woman screamed and pulled out a paring knife, battling with the black mushroom for three minutes before killing it. At the same time, she received two bone-deep wounds on her arm.

This was the level 3 punishment square.

Like what Tang Mo expected, the punishment squares come in differently levels. Higher levels mean harder punishments.

Then… how high is the highest level? And what kind of danger will they have to face?

Tang Mo looks at the stem in his hand, gaze slowly hardening.

The Invincible Police Flower shouldn’t be this weak. Five minutes of invincibility is very strong. If he met that black mushroom or some other scary punishment creature, this flower would be a godsend. But if the eight players throw the die one after another, then the next time it’s Tang Mo’s turn, at least ten minutes will have already passed.

The invincibility lasts for five minutes, but advancing to the next square takes ten.

Tang Mo’s five minutes of invincibility are all wasted here. He hasn’t advanced a single step and cannot possibly come into any danger.

Then… what’s the point of this flower’s existence?

What meaning is there to this reward?

Tang Mo squeezes the green stem, brain quickly working, but as much as he tries, he can’t think of the answer.

At this time, when the middle-aged woman is about to throw the die, Mario suddenly speaks up. “Oh, children, I forgot to mention. Being old means having a bad memory. Mr. Mario is already 36, an old man in the game world. Such an important thing, I even forgot to say it.”

The middle-aged lady raises her head dazedly, looking at Mario, holding the die in her hands.

Tang Mo vaguely feels like something’s wrong. A feeling of unease wells up in his heart.

It’s not right, it’s definitely not right…

Something’s not right!

Mario opens his mouth wide, dark eyes looking coldly at the players standing in the squares. He seems to be smiling, but his voice is full of unconcealed gloating[7]. “From the fifth round, players standing in the same square will activate ‘Who wants to share your ups and downs.’ Using the 19th square as an example, if you—” Mario points at the middle-aged woman “—roll a 2 right now, you will go from the 17th square to the 19th square. Then, it will become your square. Then after you, if anyone steps into this square, the 19th square will activate ‘Who wants to share your ups and downs.’”

Mario’s smile grows wider and wider, and the excitement and gloating becomes even more obvious.

“After the effect activates, no matter what the square originally was, it will immediately become a Level 7 punishment square. When there is only one player left on the square, the Level 7 punishment square will revert. Regardless of method, if there is only one player left on the square, or no player, it will go back to what it was before.” Mario adds again, “Oh right, if you walk to the 19th square right now, it’s okay. Even though there is already a child there, he has only reached the fourth round. ‘Who wants to share your ups and downs’ only activates for players who have reached the fifth round and later.”

Tang Mo’s eyes slowly widen, and all his body hair stands on end.

The other seven don’t understand what Mario means at first, but after a few minutes, they begin to realize.

The middle-aged woman collapses, trembling. “No, no… you’re making us kill each other, you’re making us kill people!”

At this moment, Tang Mo finally understands the usage of the Invincible Police Flower.

If someone gets the Invincible Police Flower, then he will become invincible for the next five minutes. Any player who steps in afterwards will not get the flower because at the moment he steps in, this square will turn from a reward square to a Level 7 punishment square.

A Level 3 punishment square was that dangerous black mushroom.

What would a Level 7 punishment square be like?

Everyone is panicked and at a loss for what to do. Tang Mo takes a deep breath, suppressing the unease welling up in his heart, and raises his head. His gaze suddenly sweeps over the huge LED sign above Mario’s head and has a flash of a thought. “The number on that sign, is there any special meaning to it?”

In the white world, Mario stands on the stage, looking up at the ‘6456’ above his own head.

Mario chuckles eerily. “Ah, you are asking about this. Adorable child, you are so curious. This is the total number of people who have played ‘Mario’s Monopoly Game’ with me. Such a pity, they were all unlucky and bad children, so none of them could reach me and receive my rewards. My 6464th child, will you be a lucky and good child?”

This is ‘Mario’s Monopoly Game’.

This game has only just started now.

Notes

[1]

It seems like this description is a little bit different from normal Monopoly. From what I understand, though, Chinese ppl play Monopoly the same way everyone else does, so maybe this is Mo Chenhuan's way of avoiding copyright? But I also found this picture, which seems to be just a normal turn-based square-advancing board game.

[2]

There were two 'number six's and I'm sure it was a typo but I felt like it was funny so I kept it.

[3]

I'm not sure if the meaning here was clear, but basically, it seems like Mario purposely 'forgot' to tell everyone this crucial piece of information, aka he didn't forget at all and is just being an asshole.

[4]

502 glue is a type of superglue. Read about it here.

[5]

Aeroplane chess is similar to pachisi, if yall know what that is. Unfortunately, I have not played either game so I am unable to explain the rules. It's another typical turn-based square-advancing game, though, and as you can tell, it uses dice. That's what's really important here LOL the game is just an example.

[6]

In the original text, it was 10 minutes, but I'm fairly sure it was a typo since timing matters a lot in this game (as Tang Mo will explain later).

[7]

The original phrase was 幸灾乐祸, or taking pleasure in others' pain. But I couldn't find a concise way to say that, so I went with gloating, which is sort of similar.
