Chapter 16: Something I Didn’t Know

Her long, beautiful, silver-white hair fluttered in the wind.

“The wind is rather strong today.”

“Indeed it is, my lady.”

And thus, we were on our ways to our schools while making small talk.

Having become Luna’s knight at ‘The Introductions’, a tradition at our schools, I now had to follow her and go to and from school with her.

“Look… The Solitary Moon has come to visit.”

“Ah, Luna-sama… beautiful as ever.”

As we got closer to the academy, snippets of conversations about Luna made their ways over to us, carried by the wind.

Walking along looking at her back, I was once again reminded of just how amazing a person she was.

She was the daughter of Duke Argos Flame, the head of one of the Four Great Noble Families, was the best student of the year at St. Ferris’ Girls’ Academy, and with her overwhelming aura and beauty, she reigned over the academy as its empress.

And the one to become her knight was, to the surprise of everyone, none other than me.

Thinking back, I did at first have a feeling that she was dangerous, but currently, I was quite satisfied with being her knight.

Speaking of which, since I had become the knight of that Luna Flame, the bad rumours going around about me had vanished in an instant, and it now wasn’t unusual for me to be looked at with gazes full of respect.

“Hey, look… it’s him. The one who blackmailed Luna-sama into letting him be her knight.”

“Yeah. What’s more, he’s the third son of the Astorio family. He’s so incompetent I’m amazed.”

– I take back what I said earlier.

It seemed like I still had a long way ahead of me for that to happen.

However, I knew that my choice hadn’t been wrong.

“Hey… is she… the Goddess Athena?”

“… She’s on a different level from being just cute… should I make a contract with her?”

Right. While I was busy being hated, Athena’s name had been steadily spreading.

“Y-Yuno-san, everyone’s glaring at me for some reason…” the goddess Athena said cutely, hiding behind my back.

“Kami-sama, please don’t worry. They aren’t glaring. They’re just admiring you.” I said, and her face turned so red I thought she would start emitting steam any second, causing her to hide her face behind my back again.

…Cute.

And so we passed through such gazes for a while, until two specific buildings next to each other came into view.

My job for the morning was over.

“Well then, my lady, I shall be going.”

“Yes, good work. I’ll be waiting here for us to go home.”

I nodded and turned towards my own destination.

– The Ferris Magic Knight Academy. That was the name of the school I went to.

I opened the door to the classroom and entered. As usual, a bunch of gazes were directed at me as I did so.

Hatred, jealousy, as well as pure curiosity.

Ignoring them all, I went over to the seat next to Alice, who sat in the very back row of the column nearest to the window.

“Morning, Alice.”

“Morning, Yuno.”

My childhood friend, Alice Rose. Our parents were acquainted with each other, which meant that we played a lot together back when we were little.

“How is Luna-sama?”

“Eh? Ah. Fine.”

Her golden ponytail swished through the air as she turned towards me.

Apparently she had been friends with Luna since they were young, so she usually asked me questions similar in nature.

In the end, Alice had become the knight of none other than Ein Stadt.

I had also been surprised the first time I heard. The facts amounted to her having turned down numerous invitations and ultimately having chosen the daughter of a baron.

Although, while surprised, I could see where she was coming from.

Ein had not believed in the bad rumours going around about me at the time and called out to me, so I could see why Alice had chosen her.

Although, there was also something strange about the whole thing.

I might as well ask about that, seeing as now is a perfect opportunity.

“Alice, did you already know Ein from somewhere?” I asked, and Alice made a slightly strange face.

“Yuno, even if just provisionally, you’re a knight, so call her Lady Ein. She is the person I serve, you know?”

…She has a point, that was my bad.

“Sorry. So, have you known Lady Ein for a long time?”

“No. That was the first time we ever met.”

…I see. That was unexpected, but I guess they must’ve had something in common?

“…So? What about you? What relationship do you have with her?” Alice asked strangely intensely, her sky-blue eyes staring straight at me.

“Uhh… good question? Friends… perhaps? I only got to know her a short while ago too.”

“…I see. But, back then, you…” Alice muttered to herself, turning to look outside the window with an expression of something fleeting across her face as she fell silent.

…She was acting strange.

As I was thinking that, the door to the classroom opened.

“Alright kids, sit down.” Mr. Soleil said with an indifferent tone and sleepy eyes.

“Well then, training camp will be starting soon, so I hope you all asked your ladies for permission to go.”

“““Yeees.”””

…Hm?

“You all know today was the deadline, right? Well then, come hand in the participation form you were given. You lot in the front row can go first.”

…Training camp? Participation form? What? Huh?

I stuck my hands into my desk only to find a crumpled-up participation form.

“…”

…Gulp.

I unfolded it with shaking hands.

I will / won’t participate.

– I promptly circled the ‘/’ in the middle.

What the heck… to think we had something like this coming up…

Placing both my elbows on my desk, I clasped my hands together and set off on a journey into the depths of my memory.

…When was it… remember! … I don’t remember… hearing about something lik–

“You lot got that? This training camp–”

Outside the window was the St. Ferris’ Girls’ School. All its windows had been magically enhanced to stop anyone from seeing inside.

‘But,’ I thought to myself, completely free of any impure thoughts, simply full of curiosity and absolutely nothing else, ‘if it’s me, maybe I can see through them?’

So I concentrated – consciously moving all my power to my eyes.

If I got just a little serious, like thi–

– Ah. It was back then.

Hmm.

“Hey, Yuno, hurry up.”

I nodded and handed over the paper.

“…Hm? What? So which one is it?” came the completely natural question.

“………I’ll participate?” I answered uncertainly.
