Chapter 11: Getting Advice from Kouhai

“Hey, Hiroki. Today you’re not playing well. What’s wrong with you?”

“Eh? Really?”

During the morning practice, Kouichi brought it to my attention. To be honest, I thought I was not playing the way I used to. Because I couldn’t avoid wondering about Yuki.......

“Pull yourself together; the upcoming matches undoubtedly require a lot more effort and your hard work.”

“Oh, yeah. I’ll take care of it.”

However, I still couldn’t recover from my condition during morning practice. I still need to talk with Yuki properly. But how should I start the conversation?

“Hmm?”

On my way to the water dispensary for a quick facial wash, my eyes suddenly caught a familiar figure while I was worried about my condition.

“Good morning, senpai.”

“Good morning, Ayukawa-san.”

Ayukawa-san was standing there, filling the water in a watering can.

“Thank you for practicing so hard today. By the time I come to school, you’re practicing so much already, it must be really hard for you senpai.”

“Well, at first it was tough to get up in the morning, but now I’m used to it, so I guess I’m fine. Oh, I’ll take that watering can with me”.

“Don’t worry about it; the weight isn’t much. Really, my senpais are very kind people.”

“Oh, is that so?”

“Yeah. Um, because they care about me so much. Nobody had ever been kind to me in my life before.”

“Hey, you’re overreacting. It’s not true.”

“I don’t think so. My family’s motto was ‘Don’t depend on others, but become independent yourself.’”

Wow, these words alone are enough to tell that Ayukawa-san belongs to a very strict family. It looks like she grew up well.

“You must come from a very strict family. I know I’m an unreliable senpai, but if it’s okay from you, I’ll help you in any way I can.”

“Well, senpais are not unreliable!”

The usually cool Ayukawa-san suddenly spoke up so loudly I was surprised. After saying that, Ayukawa-san turned her head and looked away from me, her face turning red.

“I’m sorry, I spoke loudly.......”

“No, don’t worry about it. But it’s good to know someone as determined as Ayukawa-san is relying on me. At least it made me feel more confident.”

“Huh, really?”

Ayukawa-san confirms while looking at me fearfully.

“Yes. So I hope you will continue to rely on me.”

“Ha, yes! Well then, do you mind if I help my senpai from now onwards?”

“Now?”

“Yes. Senpai, you must have a problem right now, don’t you?”

“What!?”

“I observed you while coming here as well as during your club activities; you were worried about something. I guess your reaction was telling the truth.”

So, did it show on my face so much? I guess Ayukawa-san’s intuition is probably good, but maybe the problem is I am also sensitive about facial expressions.

“I’m fine. It’s no big deal.”

But my problems aren’t something I can share with others. If I honestly told them about how my childhood friend kissed me so hard every day that I had to push her away to make her stop, everything would be over.

“Really? But I saw senpai’s childhood friend earlier, and she also looked like she was feeling depressed. Perhaps you had a fight?”

“Yeah, well, I mean......we didn’t fight, but...”

So Yuki is not feeling well either? I guess it means she’s still worried about what happened yesterday.

“Hm. By the way, what did you do yesterday?”

“Three of us, Yukari, Yuki, and I, studied together yesterday.”

“Oh, I get it. Senpai, you are wrong here.”

“Huh?”

Ayukawa-san seemed to have guessed something from it.

“Girls are quite envious, even more than senpai would think. Therefore, I think you should take good care of your childhood friend today. If you do this, your childhood friend might feel better.”

“Really? Are you sure?”

“Yes, I’m sure she will. But, senpai, your childhood friend was Hamachi-san, right? I think she has a future husband, doesn’t she?”

“What? Where did you hear that?”

“Rumors are going around the school that Hamachi-senpai’s future husband is really handsome.”

Wow, somebody from the soccer team must have leaked it. But even if such a handsome guy comes to school, it would be a topic of conversation, so I guess it’s inevitable a rumor would be spread. It would be bad if anyone saw us kissing from now on.

“Even if you take good care of Hamachi-senpai, don’t misunderstand the distance between you and Hamachi-senpai. She is not your lover; she is just a childhood friend. As a childhood friend, you should only do what you can.”

It is a shock. Ayukawa-san’s words were piercing to my heart and soul. Yes, I am just a childhood friend. There is a limit to what I can do. I’m not the kind of person who should be kissing. I may be treating Yuki too well. Or maybe I’m doing it for my own satisfaction.

In any case, there is no doubt our current relationship has crossed the line too far.

“He is a good person, isn’t he? Hamachi-senpai might be emotionally unstable in some way after her absence from school, and it might be better if he is trying to cooperate with her.”

If you ask me, I think Akutagawa-san has a good personality. Yuki has accepted him as a future partner, so they must be close friends. If his cooperation may lead Yuki to a better life, I’ll do whatever I can.

“Thank you, Ayukawa-san. You were very helpful.”

“I am glad I could help. Now, I’m leaving to do some watering.”

After saying these words, Ayukawa-san bowed her head and headed toward the flower beds. If I think back on whether it was jealousy or not......but as I remember correctly, I talked with Yukari all the time yesterday. If Yuki was part of the friend circle, she certainly wouldn't feel lonely.

I should have created a suitable environment for Yuki to study happily with us together. If I had done it sooner, Yuki might not have felt so lonely back then. I should apologize to her.

Then I changed my clothes and went to the classroom, and I found Yuki sitting in the classroom.

“Good morning......Hiro-kun.”

“Oh, good morning, Yuki.”

We greeted each other awkwardly as I put my bag on my seat. As Ayukawa-san had said, Yuki looked down and was frightened of something today. I guess she is still worried about what happened yesterday.

“Can we talk later......?”

I whispered in Yuki’s ear.

“What.....? Uh, yeah.”

Yuki was surprised but nodded her head in response.

“Thank you, Yuki. Then let’s talk during the next break.”

Then, after class, it was break time. I took Yuki to an unpopular place, and when we were alone.

“I’m sorry about yesterday!”

I bow my head and apologize to Yuki.

“Hi...Hiro-kun! Why are you apologizing, Hiro-kun? Wa... it was......my fault.”

“No......I thought I made you feel lonely yesterday. I wasn’t careful when I was talking with Yukari all the time......and there’s no reason for me to push you away no matter what the situation is.”

“Hi...Hiro-kun.......”

Yuki stares at my face.

“You’re too kind......Hiro-kun.”

The anxious mood I had been in earlier disappeared, and she gave me a genuine, carefree smile.

“I thought I would never get another kiss from Hiro-kun. I was so selfish with all my kisses, and I caused you so much trouble yesterday.”

“I don’t mind. But there is something I need to talk to you about the kissing part.”

“......What?”

Yuki’s carefree smile fades, and her expression becomes cloudy again. However, this probably wouldn’t be a bad thing for Yuki.

“I wondered if I should continue kissing you while Akutagawa-san was also there. I promised you, but in the end, it’s not right to keep betraying Akutagawa-san.”

“......”

Yuki didn’t open her mouth. Instead, she just stares at me, dumbfounded.

“I’ve kissed you a lot in the past, but today I heard from one of my Kouhai that I shouldn’t misunderstand the distance between us as childhood friends. After all, I wanted Akutagawa-san to cooperate with you so you could somehow come to school without depending on kissing me.”

“No.”

“What?”

Yuki replied with a single word, ‘no.’ She looked like she was about to cry right now as she grabbed my uniform tightly. I could feel her body trembling.

“Please......kiss me.”

“But...”

“I want to kiss......Hiro-kun every day.”

“But...”

“If you don’t......I will never come to school.”

Yuki holds back her tears and pleads incessantly. No matter how I tried to persuade her, it was pointless.

I don’t know why she wants to kiss me so badly. Didn't Yuki choose Akutagawa voluntarily? In fact, Akutagawa-san is amazing and has an impeccable personality. But there may be something about him only Yuki knows.

“What’s happening between you and Akutagawa-san?”

And I ask.

“......Nothing.”

But Yuki didn’t answer me. I think something happened between those two, but I can’t imagine what it is. So all I can do is to ask Yuki, but there is nothing I can do unless she answers.

“Please......Hiro-kun. Let’s......kiss, like we have been......please?”

Yuki bursts into tears. All I want is for her to be happy, but if I make her cry, there’s nothing I can do. Guilt weighs on my back. I begin to think maybe kissing her is the right thing to do if it’s the best thing for Yuki.

“......Okay I get it.”

So I gave up at the end and kissed her as I had always done till now.

“Thank you.......I’m sorry......for being so selfish.”

“......I’m the one who’s responsible for......not taking your feelings into consideration.”

“Will we do it again after school today?”

“Yeah.”

“......Thank you.”

Yuki looked like she felt relieved, and her tears were stopped. Maybe it was the right choice to force her to stop kissing me. But I couldn’t find a way to do so. If Yuki wants me to kiss her every day, I’ll do everything I can for her.

Thus, the problem was resolved without causing any harm to our relationship. Then, as usual, we went to class, had lunch, did some chatting, went to class again, and then.......

“......Hiro-kun, Chuu.”

I kissed her and then went to club activities. The routine of my life begins.
