Chapter 154: After the Turmoil

The next day on the terrace of the Royal Castle, you could find a happy-looking Sonaris as well as a slightly sleepy me, both wearing sparkly clothes.

Soon, the Kingdom would experience a parade of trials, full of rebelling nobles.

The first to be brought to trial was the Busch family, who was being charged with their attempt to murder me and kidnap and enslave Sonaris. Count Busch was sentenced to beheading along with all males over 10 years old. The women and boys under 10 years old were turned into commoners.

Next to be tried was Viscount Hunterley, who was captured by the Second Army. They also found their aristocratic house demolished, but only the head was sentenced to beheading. The rest of the family were demoted to commoners. It was also discovered that the Viscount was hiding members of the Newgarden family, all the males from the Newgarden family over 10 years old were sentenced to beheading.

One of the nobles I captured, Baron Pagenou was sentenced to death, but his son Scott’s punishment was left to my discretion. The rest of his family was turned into commoners.

The rest of the rebelling nobles had their heads sentenced to death while their families became commoners.

Members of the Anti-Royalist faction found themselves under careful scrutiny where even minor transgressions were investigated. Some ended up with just fines, while others found their house destroyed. The King wanted to nip any further rebellions in the bud.

Marquis Raven, who had backed the Prince Henry faction that started the second rebellion, had his house destroyed and he was sentenced to death. His son, who was smart enough to object to his father’s actions, was demoted to a commoner. The other members of his family were also demoted to commoners.

The final noble was Viscount Hippo. While he hadn’t participated in the rebellion, he moved to reinforce a family that was attempting to escape punishment for rebellion. The head was sentenced to death for the crime and the family was demoted to a Baron.

The militia members of the various nobles that fought in the rebellion were fined, but not put to death. Certain soldiers that had allied with the rebellion were sentenced to death, but most were demoted and fined.

Those that had been marked for beheading, mostly heads of noble families, were scheduled to be beheaded at the Capital’s execution ground.

What about those that were sentenced to death?

At a later date, there was a public execution at the execution ground for the nobles that were not to be beheaded. There was a fee for visitors, 10 copper coins (1,000 yen, $8), and commoners would see fat nobles being executed. The Abbott family was in charge of the whole shebang. It seems they really played it up, there were many commoners in attendance.

However, the attendees ended up leaving disappointed. The event turned into a repetitive parade of a noble brought onto stage, the noble’s limbs are broken by a giant snake, and finally the crying noble is swallowed by the giant snake. Yeah, Pi-chan was the executioner and received the name of “man-eating monster”. Plus, I’ve been recognized by the commoners as the family that employs man-eating monsters to devour my enemies.

Scott Pagenou’s punishment was a little different. He was tied to a horse by his left wrist and dragged through the Royal Capital, so he arrived scraped and bloodied as a certain place.

I need to explain the sewage systems of the Royal Capital, you’ll see why.

The aristocratic district is equipped with a basic sewer system. While there’s no running water, there are pipes that carry away waste to the river.

What about the other districts? Well, they’re on the cart-away system handled by unemployed men. Waste collects in the “privies” of residents, then is regularly emptied for a few coppers by men who cart it to a manure dump. There, it is dumped into pits, then straw is spread over the night soil, then regular soil is put over the straw. After a while, the insects and animals turn it into fertilizer for the fields.

I kicked Scott Pagenou into a deep pit at the manure dump. I may have been laughing while I did it. It seems one of the workers noticed it, so I now have even more notoriety.

The second queen Philia was placed under house arrest in the castle with her daughter, Second Princess Sophia.

As for Henry?

“Do you have any last words?” King

“I was the better one!” Henry

He continued to assert his superiority to the end. The King even offered to let him off with house arrest if Henry would apologize.

“Do it” King says quietly

Fssh!

The sound of the guillotine blade echoes after it falls.
